I was driving back after eating with some friends. I was on a "fun" road, I guess. Either way, a tight turn was coming up, so I downshift from 4 to 3. I am at 3500 or so. I have to go down one more gear, no one is around me, so I decide to do it again. Then I hear a loud pop . I don't know what a misfire sounds like, but that is what I think it sounds. Now I am unbelievable worried.
I have heard about DI failure from these cars, but I bought my car much later(January of last year), so I thought I was past it. This is the first loud pop I have heard. Any way to check for codes and stuff that the car may have a problem? The good news is, it only happened once. After revving it for 5 minutes, I couldn't get pop similar to that at all. Maybe I am going crazy, and I might be worried for no reason, but that is just me.

I you want to check for codes, word on the street is you can bring it to an Advance Auto or somewhere similar and they'll scan it for you for free.

Could just be some popoff

This was louder than what it usually does sometimes. But I really hope so. I honestly don't want to go get some DI seals and replace them cause it is expensive.

A backfire in my Trans Am sounds like a gunshot. Of course that was on an old V8 not a boxer 4 cyl.

The SH Forester has a hidden diagnostic mode that lets you view codes, but not reset them. Not sure if it works for the other Subaru models, but it might be worth a shot
It's accessed by the following:
turn ignition on
quickly (you've ten seconds to do all this)
turn on light switch
press trip reset four times
turn lights off
press trip reset four times
turn lights on
press trip reset four times
Any displayed codes are cycles using the trip button.

I might just be overreacting to this whole thing, but it wasn't anything I have heard before. Usually it is some burbles when slowing down. Although this was during a downshift.

Burbling when slowing down can be an indicator of unburned fuel in the exhaust (can happen on decel). When you hit the gas to speed match before downshifting again you could possibly light up a patch of unburned fuel int he exhaust.
I think nothing to worry about.

Possibly. I was slowing down. If I have heard a car misfire would make this so much easier!

Happens to me occasionally in the GTI. Unless it keeps happening regularly when it didn't before, nothing to worry about. Just a little fuel exploding outside the engine instead of in it.

This is the first time, and I couldn't replicate it the rest of the night, so that is a plus. I wouldn't have been so worried if these cars didn't have so many problems with their DI!

Yeah, especially since you can't recreate it, I just wouldn't worry about it. Performance cars do funny things sometimes :p
